Hippity Hoppity Onwards To Harrods

It’s time for the Hop On /Off bus.  Off they go to hop off at Chinatown and walk up to Covent Garden.

Dad jumped on the bus and went upstairs to the deck on top. Mom looked at the stairs and figured she’d keep the bus driver company.

They got off at Chinatown and saw a pub that called to them.

They had to go inside and see all the slugs.  Rip off!  There were no slugs but a delicious bottle of Light Pepsi waited for them.

Off they went to Covent Garden.  They had to see where James Bowen and Streetcat Bob had been busking the Big Issue magazine.  Since those times James and Streetcat Bob have accomplished a lot.  These two former street guys are financially secure and can buy stuff they never ever thought they could at one time.

The next stop for mom and dad was Harrods.                                                             The first stop was the food halls and specifically the different fancy teas.

Mom was in her glory and bought Harrods Tea….Afternoon Blend                                                                       Then it was over to the food halls for a peek at the fancy foods.                                                                           Mom saw a sandwich she just had to have.  It was two pieces of rye bread with butter, a cooked thinly sliced beet, smoked salmon, cut thinly and a few bean sprouts on top.  The sandwich was cut in fours…just the way mom likes.  Mom offered half to dad, who wrinkled up his nose but mom insisted as they should always be open to new ideas.  Dad took a quarter and loved it so much he ate the other quarter.

Mom wanted to buy something from Harrods other than just the tea, so decided to buy some perfume.  It cost more than the ready cash they had.  So dad would have to pull out more loot.  Dad disappeared to stand alone by a wall so he could get at his money belt.  A store security man went over and told him there was none of that in this store.  The security man thought dad was playing with himself….what a hoot!  Dad had to explain what he was trying to do without turning red  with embarrassment. MOL                                                               After purchasing the perfume our travellers went back to the hotel with their treasures.

Mom explained to dad that she needed her furs washed but the sink was as big as her face.  Dad said never fear, he will help.  So dad shampooed and used conditioner on mom’s fur.  Trouble is he didn’t get all the soap and conditioner out…a very difficult task.  So mom happily was walking around with a half pound of shampoo in her fur.  I sound like Shoko don’t I?  Let’s get the drama queen in here to explain the next chore of moms.  Thanks Kali.  Mom told dad she needed a bath also but the bathtub was too deep, she couldn’t step into it.  The bathtub was an old-fashioned tub but with handrails on each side of the tub.  The back didn’t go straight but was more like a slide.  A funny looking tub to mom.  Dad helped mom and she slid down the back of the tub and landed with a plop….kinda hard on the butt she said.  Yet here she was with water and soap. The inside of the tub was indented the shape of her legs and butt.  There was a problem because of these indentations she couldn’t lift her swollen legs  but the water felt so good.  A helping paw from dad and she was out and never wanted back in ever again. MOL

So sorry about the quality of the photo…think mom had too much tea before shooting the picture.   Do you see the grooves?                                                                    Well shampoo head and her mate, Helpful Harry, drifted off to sleep very quickly.

Next installment involves a train ride up country.

Shopping Around the World In February/Friday Fill-In

cat-and-cart

Hi my friends.  Mom and dad decided to work on this Shopping Around the World together.  This seems ridiculous to me cause mom and dad’s priorities are different.

aashokochef

This Shopping Around the World is being hosted by Two Spoiled Cats.  This is a blog hop so when you have finished your SAW, click on Two Spoiled Cats.

The dish is supposed to be a meatless dish.  Dad is a meat eater like us so this idea took him off guard.  Dad and I chattered about the lack of meat, then dad bravely decided he could live through one meal without meat.

They made up their own dish called Feta Cheese and Spinach Pastry.  Sounds good doesn’t it?  They thought so and went about gathering ingredients.

You will need:

a frozen packet of chopped spinach…300 grams $1.98… aannspinach

feta cheese….Ziggy’s is the best….400 grams….$5.50aafetacheese

Greek spice……adds that greek touch.  Jar is $5.60aagreekspice

Fresh Mushrooms…you know what a fresh mushroom looks like…quit jivin’ me.   You do to!!    Seven fresh mushrooms $1.66

Red Pepper….. $2.86

garlic…..$0.33

Phyllo Pastry….. $3.30                                                                          aaphyllo-pastry-sheets

The egg mixture is for pouring inside the tart before cooking.

2 eggs

120 ml milk

Typical mom, she had beet greens in the freezer so used them…about 1 and a half cups plus the frozen spinach.  You must wring out the spinach and remove all juice that you possibly can remove.  That’s a whopping load of spinach. She put the spinach and beet greens in a bowl.  Mom chopped up the red pepper in small pieces….about half the red pepper.  She sautéed the red pepper by itself and then dumped it in the mixture.  Mom chopped up about 6 medium mushrooms in slices and sautéed those, adding them to the mixture.  Meanwhile dad is playing angry birds and winning.  Good going dad!                                                                 chefshokOk, what’s next mom?  Dad, mom says it’s up to you to help.  My lack of thumbs will be a problem but I’ll supervise.

Did someone mention feta cheese and greek spice? Time for…..

aachefkaliOmpa!! MOL  This is fun.

To recap after so rudely being interrupted:  We’ve taken the ingredients and sautéed the mushrooms and red pepper and now add the chopped feta cheese to the mixture.  We put in about 3/4 of a cup.  “The more feta the beda.” mew, mew, MOL   I break me up, *pounds counter*.  Get over yourself Shoko and get on with the recipe!

We have our mixture together, even the red peppers and mushrooms.  Now it’s time to haul out the phyllo pastrySeeing as it was frozen, it is best thawed out in the fridge.  This pastry does not take kindly to being dried out.  When you bring the phyllo pastry out have a glass of water and a brush for the pastry and keep it moist.  When it starts to dry it breaks off.  We decided to use about 4 sheets of pastry for um…pastry thingee and 1 cup of filling.

Meanwhile mix together 2 eggs and 120 ml. of milk, salt and pepper.  Our tarts were humongous so we split the egg mixture into the 3 pastries we had.  Wrap the pastry so extra pastry is  sticking up so it can fan out a bit.  Then cook the pastries for 40 to 50 minutes.                                                                      aafetaspinach-pie1 Voila!!  One huge pastry.

The taste test….Mmmm…they both agree, the pastry looks unappetizing, …maybe if they were smaller….  The taste is beyond compare, just delicious.  A slice of the feta and spinach pastry gives you a serving of vegetables.

aaamomdad1Cooking and eating done, mom and dad braved the cold and ventured out.

Legend of the Mountain Ash

.

Did I ever tell you about the power of the Mountain Ash Tree?  I didn’t!  Well ,  grab a nip tea, pull up a blankie, listen and learn my friends.  Comfy, good.  How bout you Shoko?  What do you know about the Mountain Ash?  Not a heck of a lot Kali but mom said it was going to be a bad winter according to the Mountain Ash.  What about the Mountain Ash made her think it was going to be a bad winter?  The berries.  There are like tons of red berries on it.  I wonder how peeps found out the more berries on the Mountain Ash, the harder the winter?                                                                      There is an Objibwa legend that explains how the berries came to be in the Mountain Ash tree.

Before Canada had a name, a severe and terrible winter set in.  The temperatures plummeted to many degrees below freezing.  There were huge drifts of snow wherever one looked.

While in search of food Indian hunters became terrified when they came across hundreds of dead birds and small animals.  The Indians offered prayers to the Great Manitou.

The Great Spirit instructed them to take one drop of blood from each dead bird and small animal and smear it on the tree that meant life or death to their people.  The Mountain Ash was the tree the bows and arrows were made from so they smeared the blood on the Mountain Ash as instructed by Manitou.  The following morning the Mountain Ash bore thousands of berries.  The birds and small animals that had survived were perched on the branches eating the life giving food.

The Indians gave thanks to the Great Manitou who in turn promised that whenever a cold winter was approaching again, he would cover these trees with food.

What a tail you weave Kali, thanks for the info.
