Shopping In My World- Cooking In Fort Meezer

This month Phenny from Easy Blog is our super host for Shopping Around the World and Phenny says we must make something with gourds.  Mom debated about this.  Should she make cookies, a loaf….what to do?  She finally decided to make up her own recipe.  Give her a minute and she’ll name it.

SHOKO…..BLACK
KALI…..ORANGE

Should we both help mom, Kali?  I think so Shoko….this recipe is from whatever she dreams up….perhaps us guiding her would be a good idea.  I’ll be back later Kali, I hear the wind calling my name.  Really, what a wiener head! Humph!  Guess it’s you and me, mom.                                                We will call this dish, “Haunted Squished Squash Head.”  Pretty descriptive, eh?  It is a meal for Halloween.

Let’s get on with this very creative dish.

Haunted Squished Squash Head or (HSSH to save space on paper)

Ingredients:

1 acorn squash
1 pkg Knorr Sidekick Noodles
leftover veggies in the fridge
some frozen peas and corn
1 300g pkg, frozen shrimp

The very first thing to do is get a sharp knife and scoop.  Cut a face in the acorn squash and scoop out the seeds and pulp.

We’ll rinse and drain the shrimp.

These shrimp were $6.17 for the package of 300 g. at Real Canadian Superstore.                                                       You want to take your acorn squash and steam the cut faced squash.  The size depends on how many people are having dinner with you.  If there are two, like mom and dad, then a small to medium-sized squash will be plenty.

The acorn squash was $1.99 for one at Superstore.

Put the squash in a cup of water in the casserole dish and cover with tin foil.  Cook the squash with nothing in it for about an hour at 350F.  It is finished cooking when the meat inside is just slightly tender.

Oops!  Looks like the steaming turned our Harold squash into a Harry the Haggard-Faced Squished Squash.

NO PICTURE!

You want to make up your Sidekick noodles now.  Make them up from the directions on the bag just use about 1/4 C less water.  Mom used the Honey Garlic noodles.

The Knorr Sidekick noodles were $0.97 at Superstore.

To the water for the noodles add whatever produce you have leftover in the fridge….within reason…..no cantaloupe or melon in the pasta, please.   For example, mom had a little left over red and yellow peppers.  So she chopped them into small chunks and there were 5 mushrooms sitting in the fridge so they went into the pasta water too.  The mushrooms and peppers will lose juice which will go into the water, this is why we cut out 1/4C of the water.  Now cook the noodles as per the recipe. You’re going to get a whole bucket of pasta mom….you’ll never get it into the squash.  No way!

I’m back.  I had to teach Mr, Fishie not to swim from me.  I stared at him then smashed his smiling face.  I’ll put him back in the water after I help you.

I’m busy Shoko….sit quietly.  Are you saying I have verbal diarrhea?  No, but I am telling everyone how to make this dish and you’re screwing it up.  Ohh!  Sorry!  *Shh* We start stuffing the cooked squash shell.  The squash takes a fair bit of the noodle filling.

Now that the noodle filling is in place.   Place the squash in the same casserole dish, minus the water, and then in the oven at 350F until it is warmed up about 20 minutes.

When the squash is out of the oven, use a fork and pull some of the noodles through the eye and mouth sockets.  These are worms.  Put some shrimp on the top of the squash head with the tail sticking out.  For effect, pour some cocktail sauce over the shrimp (blood).  Have some blood coming out of the eyes.

There is your Haunted Squished Squash Head.  I was right.  There was enough filling for another Haunted Squished Squash Head tomorrow night.

Happy Halloween!

A Well Dug Hole Here and a Little Tinkle There

Planting day.  Mom have you got the necessities?  Let’s see the list…..hand shovel, trowel, bone meal and manure.  Check.  We’re ready.  Oh my, the seeds!  We need peas, Scarlet Runner pole beans, Blue Lagoon pole beans, beets, yellow beans. carrots and potatoes.  Check!

We’ll use these poles for playing *limbo* or *how low can you go* after we’re finished with the garden.

Dad did a great job with the rototiller.  I wish Nellie was here…she knows her stuff.

Beautiful, we need to make rows, mom.

We need to start here…who’s that?  It  looks like Nellie from Nellie On The Edge  Nellie?  Nellie….is that you?                                                                                “Hi Shoko! Looks like our work is done, Nellie.                                                                         I’s changing back to mes devilish self and headed to mes new home.  If, you need mes just call and I ‘ll come.

Bye me friends,

Harvest Weekend

Well friends, we have gotten down to the nitty gritty in the garden.  Beans, peas and beets must come out this weekend,  The squash must be picked or covered.  The temperatures are getting down to 2C tonight….that’s 35F.  We are urged to cover up the veggies.  The tomatoes will be covered tonight.  Mom’s bringing out the peas and beans now.  It will take more than today to take care of these so tomorrow will be another full day.  The veggie garden is starting to look like the end is near.

Look at those tomatoes!!

Look at those tomatoes!

Felix/Cow-Kitty was keeping a close eye on me and he is gorgeous.

We also have visitors from Cat Scouts.  The Flat Cats of King Meiko and Pete  showed up Wednesday.  We call them Fing Feiko and Fete to separate them from the real ones.  Kali is getting along great with Fing Feiko and Fete.

Geesh, his butt doesn’t smell at all mom…he must be very clean!  Wish I smelled that blah.  Go stick him in the nip mom…then he’ll smell of something.

DSCN3825Fete and Kali had a chat about the necessity of boxes in their lives.

I hate to admit it but I was scared of Fing Feiko and Fete.  Even when they smell like the nip.

That’s right, not even Felix was afraid of Fing Feiko.  I’m embarrassed.  He’s all the way from Texas and I won’t stand still when he’s around.  Anybody got any suggestions?

Produce From Our Garden

I’ll bet you wondered what happened to us.  We haven’t posted for awhile.  Mom has been busy with harvesting the veggies.  Well, all this warm weather has had a great effect on the veggie garden.  The peas, chard and beet greens are being frozen for the winter.    Beets have been frozen and 2 bags of peas.  This took quite the amount of time.  We had to pick the peas, shell them and divide the older peas from the tender ones.  Granted mom and dad did most of this but I walked through the garden with her.  Just so she didn’t mess up the veggies.

What have we been doing while mom and dad are steaming their faces off with the veggies?  It has turned cool here so our pool has disappeared.  No more fun with the pool.  Dad cut our catnip wwwway back and hung the stalks from the ceiling of the deck.  Mom will pack the leaves and buds away for our relatives at Christmas.  This is still what mom and dad are doing but Kali and I helped  with these chores.  I sat in the middle of the catnip and yelled in perfect Niponese,”NO!! Not our nip!”  Dad didn’t listen but said my voice was very forceful.

No!  Down came the nip.  Mom said there is another full month of summer, at least, and I’ll be chewin’ on nip again this summer.  Nice tender nip too.  I like the sound of that mom.  Remember that Flat Einstein and Timmy are coming for a visit from Pennsylvania in August.

Kali has not been up to much.  She keeps using her stairs in the bedroom.  Looking all smug and happy.  Today I showed her what I could do with the stairs.

I just wanted Kali to see that I was no longer afraid of the stairs.  My point made, I left to help outside.

Kali went into the living room and covered herself while laying on the love seat.

I was not in as much demand as I thought so I headed out to the greenhouse.  Kali and I spent the rest of the afternoon resting up.

Hope your day was as mellow as yours.

A Walk Through The Garden In July

This is a lovely summer’s day.  The temperature is not sweating us out of the house.  The rains have come and gone.  This means no more restrictions on watering with sprinklers.

Come let’s walk through the backyard and view the plants. The first plants we come across are the herbs.  Mom has dried lots of them and is looking to make herbed vinegar and oil.  I told her she doesn’t have the time but she insisted in that way peeps can.

DSCN3642You see the tall herb right in the middle of the barrel….well, that is tarragon and mom is going to put it in wine vinegar.  I wonder if the wine vinegar will taste yucky after she finishes with it.

We are headed to the veggie garden next.  I have fertilized and watered everyday.  Also I have mixed the soil so that bugs don’t have a chance to set up housekeeping.

You will notice in the first row there is cauliflower, 3 of them to be exact.  There are a couple of beets and a few carrots.  I got to aerating the soil and couldn’t help myself and did a witches dance.  The results are only 2 beets remain in that row and there are very few carrots this year.  However, mom got all carried away with the beets and chard in the second row….making up for my boo boo in the first row.  The 3rd. row is all corn and doing very well from all that hot weather we had.  The two last rows are beans and peas.  Notice the sunflowers mom grew from seed.

Come over here my friend and see part of the flower garden.

Right in the middle of the picture are the lavender coloured phlox.  The aroma from the phlox is divine, so mom says….I think it stinks myself.  Beside the phlox, is the new rose mom got as a remembrance of her mom.  Behind the phlox and rose and well protected are 2 huge tomato plants.  Moving to the left, there is the pink hydrangea.  Mom added a chemical compound to the soil to turn the soil more acidy, thereby giving us blue flowers instead of pink.  It didn’t work mom.  There is another big tomato plant behind the hydrangea.  The tomatoes have lots of fruit but they’re not red yet.

Let’s step into the greenhouse for a few moments and see how the crops are doing in there.                                                     You are looking at the 3  pepper plants we got from small transplants.  All 3 have peppers on them.  The one pepper to the right is an Hungarian Sweet Pepper Plant.   Mom thought because of its shape the peppers would be hot and she figures she’s hot enough and doesn’t need those to help her.  Aw mom I didn’t mean to embarrass you!  MOL   You can see the leeks just in front of the peppers and the celery is to the far left.  To the far right and out of sight is the Spaghetti Squash.  Mom has pollinated the squash but no big ones are on the way yet.

Let’s mosey (mousey) back to the deck.

Look who stopped by for a visit, the cow kitten neighbour from next door. He sure is growing.

Ack!  Don’t run at me like that!  Now I need a piddle pad from Dezi of Dezi World’s powder room.  Geesh.  This is not how to make friends!

What’s happening out her Shoko?  Look for yourself Kali, its our neighbour again.                                                         What’s he doing Shoko?  I don’t know….maybe, no it can’t be….biting his tail?  Really?

MOL, Look at his reaction after biting his tail Kali.  MOL.  What a funny guy.
