In Purrsuit of Flavours…..Colourful Cuisine

Today I plan to laze about sipping nip julips.  Not so Tyebe cause it’s time for In Purrsuit of Flavours  December’s theme is colourful cuisine,

We wanted to do something seasonal cause these holidays come around once a year.  So our co-sponsor Da Phenny and Neilson of Easy Blog suggested something colourful to throw out this flea bitten year.

We are also joining Sandee in Comedy Plus for a wordy Wordless Wednesday. She always comes up with such lovely pictures that are both heart warming and happy.

So we decided to make our rendition of Spooky Shortbread Cookies.  We were right happy at Halloween with the Witches Fingers so let’s bring this relaxed attitude to the shortbreadFirst we had to escort mom to the basement to find the cookie cutters for the shortbread.  C’mon mom bring Spot and let’s play with him.  Mom and dad looked through the decorations for Christmas….all 5 boxes.  They figured the box marked “Kitchen” would hold the treasures….no friggin way.  The cookie cutters were found in the box marked *Advent Calendar.*

A fast round of Spot ensued and then Spot ran upstairs so we followed.

Look at these cookie cutters, Tyebe.  We have the suits for a deck of cards.  How unchristmasy can one get?  Found some more Shoko.

Well, our cookie cutters are showing our artsy style….ya, that’ll be why they’re so different.

This is an easy shortbread recipe.  It’s not picky like some.  We just thought of it but we hope you can find the ingredients at your grocery store.  No toilet paper was involved so maybe you will find the goodies to make this.

1 Cup butter, softened
1 Cup confectioner’s sugar ( we used icing sugar as that’s what mom had)
1 egg
1 tsp. almond extract
2 and 2/3 Cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp vanilla extract

*Optional…red/ green food colouring, nuts, raisins, craisins, eyeballs, red decorating gel

Not too many ingredients. Are you ready Tyebe….quit playing with the cookie cutters. They aren’t mice.

Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl.

Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; scrape the sides of the bowl and either make a ball of the dough or 3 balls like we did. We then added red food colouring to one, green to another and left one ball white.

Put your balls in the refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes. This is an important step so don’t forget. You can wrap them in a plastic wrap or just leave them in the bowl.  We had balls galore,,,,,cold balls.

Bring your balls out of the fridge.

Preheat oven to 375F and spread out parchment paper on a cookie sheet. We used a cookie sheet and a half.    So cut that cookie sheet in half….mol Tyebe!

Remove dough from fridge. Press the dough with rolling pin to about 1/2 inch thick…..maybe a tad more. Use your cookie cutters to make shapes.

Then apply some of your decorations on the cookies. BE CAREFUL!! The eyes need to go on after the baking is completed or they melt….we discovered this at Halloween.

Bake in a 375F oven for 10 minutes.

Decorate to your heart’s content.  Now that you don’t have balls anymore, try using your nuts.

  • Finish decorating as soon as the cookies come out of the oven,  Then they will cool and suck up the decoration.
