Shopping Around the World In November

cute-kitten-sitting-shopping-cartThanks to Piglove and Fozziemum for providing us a forum to tell everybody our recipes.  Go Bacon!

We are supposed to be cooking up a Thanksgiving side dish but our Thanksgiving was last month, in October.  Mom and dad won’t appreciate anything to do with a turkey so close to Christmas.  The peeps in the States can hack it.  Well, we’re a little different.

So what are we cooking then Shoko?  Mom says she’s making up fish cakes.  How un-Thanksgiving like.  Well, this dish is for a break after all that  turkey.  Most of her ingredients are from the vegetable garden….but not the salmon Shoko.  Too bad, we could be rich if mom could grow fish out in the garden.

What’s that Elfin John doing?  You want to help us?  We don’t need your help, thank you.  I think we should let him help, Shoko.  He may be turning over a new leaf and who are we to stop his progress.  I don’t believe it Kali and now I feel guilty.  Oh, alright,,,,he can help us.

Here is a picture of the ingredients.

aaingredientsaaingredients2

Here is a picture of the ingredients mom forgot to show in the first photo.

Now that you’re confused we’ll tell you the ingredients:

1 onion, diced…$.030
1/4 cup shredded carrot…..garden…optional
4 average old potatoes…..garden
1/4 cup green pepper…$0.25
1/4 cup red pepper……$0.25
4 drops Worcester sauce…optional…cupboard
celery leaves….2 tbsps..optional
1/2 cup frozen peas
Sockeye salmon…..150 grams (5.3 ounces)… $5.25

Mom sends to St, Jean’s Cannery for her salmon.  Wonderful tasting salmon.  St. Jean’s Cannery is in the city of Nanaimo where Nanaimo Bars were invented.

We are all ready to get underway.                                                             aashokochef

Fry the peppers, onion, potatoes, dill, fall, nip, Kali, electric, cakes and shredded carrot, until they are just soft. Throw them into the mashed potatoes with Worcester sauce.  Add the dill and all other ingredients.  Your mixture is set to be fried.                                                             aaelfinbowlHey you…Elfin!!!  Get away before you fall in.

Good grief, I need a nip smoothie.  This little guy is getting to me.

aanipdrink2Thank you Kali.

Now, lets get out the electric fry pan.  Turn the temperature to high and spray a bit of oil in the bottom of the pan, about a tbsp.  Shape the cakes into round shapes about the size of a hamburger patty. When these rounds are in the frying pan press them flatter with a spatula. Our fry pan  holds 7 medium fish cakes.                                                                 aafishcakes1

These are the cooking fish cakes.  Mom is not great at flipping them over but she’s the boss.                                                                   aacookfc2There you have it friends.  Now for a sip of my nip smoothie.

What are you doing in my smoothie, you oddball!

aaelfindrinkYuck…I don’t want an elfin smoothie!!

May the food I burn, light your path.

Shopping Around the World…One Dish Meal

Fozziemum and Piglove are our fabulous hosts for Shopping Around The World.  This month we are making one dish meals.                                                               ng-cart

Mom decided to make a shrimp casserole.  After trying Sammy’s Shrimp Salad, mom has discovered the tasty joys of shrimp cooking.  Of course, this is Sammy from One Spoiled Cat.

We are ready for some dancin’ and sliddin in the kitchen.  Right mom, OK…. this is serious business.  We’re ready for some Chopin… I mean choppin’ and whiskin’.  I been whiskin’…MOL Just whiskin’….whiskin’my day away.                                                             chefshok   Shrimp Casserole:

Sidekicks $1.25 (ON SALE)                                                                             aasidekickshalf an onion (cupboard)
celery,1 stalk (fridge)
mushrooms,5 (fridge)
carrots,4 small (garden)
beet greens 4 small (garden)
red peppers,3 small (greenhouse)
peas, handful (garden)
beans,8 fresh (garden)
Shrimp 1 300 g. pkge. or (2 shrimp rings….$9.98) Only use 1 box.

I do believe that’s all the ingredients my friends.

DIRECTIONS:

With the sidekicks, cook them as the pkg. states.  As these are cooking, cut up your mushrooms, onion, celery and red pepper and sauté them in 1 tbsp. of olive oil.  TIP:  If you have someone in your household that picks veggies out of the mixture so they don’t have to eat them, chop everything small.  These folk don’t stand a chance in Hades of getting anything out.  MOL Your sidekicks should be ready. Pour the whole thing into your casserole dish and stir. It’s the only thing in there so one swish otta do er. Add your sautéed onion, green peppers, mushrooms and celery. These veggies should be just bendable, they will finish cooking in the casserole and the juices will float about in the mixture. Now you will need to pick some beans, peas, carrots and beet greens. For most folks they can grab a handful of frozen peas and beans and go with that. A few carrots from produce would be nice. If, these are uncooked, partially cook them and add to the mixture. The carrots can be shaved into the casserole or chopped, or anyway you prefer them. You can also add leftovers from the fridge if they would go together.  Any added veggies should be cooked for about 10 minutes or long enough for the veggie to be just slightly soft. No chocolate and beans….it sounds ghastly!
The final ingredient to add is your shrimp. Mom always seems to get shrimp with the tails on them. This is very unpleasant when chowing down on the casserole so you want to remove the tails. I sent Kali to pull all the tails off the shrimp because it is so boring. She is playing…”he loves me…loves me not…loves me…” thinking of her beau Buddy from the Tomcat Commentary by Tim.
akalipersian

hehe…this isn’t a Persian meal Kali.  I know but when’s mom going to make a Persian dish?  Thought I’d take this opportunity to show off my new Persian garb.

Cook the casserole in the oven for 15 minutes at 375 degrees.  If the casserole starts to look dry add some water…1/4 cup and stir like you’re on nip.  After 15 minutes add the tailless shrimp and cook for another 10 minutes.

aashrimpcass1What are those black blobs in there, mom?  You didn’t grab a few beetles and through them in, did you?  You know Kali probably didn’t get all the tails off the shrimp so they’ll be a little crunchy anyways. No mom…..sorry.  Mom said I was being rude so I’m really sorry, there are no bugs in this casserole, nada….none.  PSSSST….mom burnt the red pepper!  MOL                                                                   aaakalishokfoodBring on the shrimp mom!  We’re waiting patiently.

May your tunnel never develop holes.

Shopping Around The World With Chef Kali

Here it is another Shopping Around the World hosted by Piglove and Fozziemum.  This week we can make anything our little pea pickin’ hearts desire.

Kali stood up and said she wanted to be the celebrity chef from Fort Meezer, for this dish.

achefdoneHello my friends.  My dish today will be Greek Potatoes

Let’s hear it for Greek Potatoes…..*smashes plate by throwing it at the wall.* “OPA!!”  hehe  Do you know where the Greek custom of smashing glasses and plates stems from?  MOL…Stems…glasses…MOL  Opa!! *smash*Me-wow

Greek tradition has it that this practice started when a rich family invited a much poorer family to dinner and to make them feel better invited them to break the plates. They were proving that friendship is everything. And there’s no better way of proving that than dining with friends over Greek food.

Shopping Around The World

ng-cartHere it is November already.  Piglove and Fozziemum started Shopping Around the World for us to compare prices in different countries.  Mom sits and is shocked by the cheap price of milk products in other countries.  Canada has a board that regulates the price of milk products so our prices are high my friends.  Now the Americans are celebrating their Thanksgiving shortly so we were asked to do a sidedish or dessert….something that would go with a turkey.  Well, we had our turkey in October but we could have this dish any day.

We did our shopping at The Great Canadian Superstore.

1 bulb of fresh garlic:……$0.50  using 1 clove $0.08

Philidelphia cream cheese: $2.98 using 1/4 of pkge. $0.74

3 old potatoes:     $2.30

Sprig of parsley:  $1.28 a bundle using 1 sprig..$0.10

dried rosemary:   free….grown in the garden

Total cost for this dish is $3.22

Rosemary Garlic Mashed Taters

First you peel those 3 potatoes and then boil them in a pot on the stove….not too high a temp or the water will boil all over like mom’s did.  Right, you wash the taters off first before boiling….seems like a waste of time to me cause any cwap is going to boil off anyway.  While the taters are doing their thing, wash off the sprig of parsley and the rosemary.  Grind the rosemary on a mortar with your wee pestle.  Shred the garlic clove and set everything aside. Have a bit of refreshment…you’re probably thirsty by now.  The taters are done.  Drain them and put into a big good sized bowl  now either use your potato masher on those suckers or haul out your old mix master and make those taters talk.  Put in the Philly cheese and rosemary….keep mixing.  When the taters are so soft they look like pillows, dump them in a bowl and stick a sprig of parsley in them.  Salt, pepper and butter are optional although I think butter is a must.                                                            garlicrosemary potatoesThey look nice mom.  Or:

rosemarygarlic mashed tatersI shall model the Rosemary Garlic Mashed Taters.  They are best with butter.

Sunday Selfie and more

What a yucky day….nothing but rain, rain and then more rain.

It’s just as well Shoko is off at the Cat Scout carnival today or she’d be wanting to play, “chase and bite butt.”  I really don’t like that game but Shoko insists we should play it on rainy days.

In the past look at the toys I have been trying to entice Shoko with.  She finally got all soft and kissed me instead.

Shoko didn’t want me to say anything to you but yesterday mom was so angry with Shoko that I thought mom would burst!  It was a beautiful day here yesterday so mom opened the screen door to the deck, so Shoko and I could go in and out at will.  There are no mosquitos or many flies so she thought it was safe.  Mom was busy blanching some beans for freezing and Shoko came rushing in and headed straight for her condo,  Mom saw Shoko throwing something in the air so went over to investigate.  There lay a small bird, its heart just apounding.  Mom hollered,”NO, NO, NO…get away!” several times.  Mom doesn’t say no often so Shoko listened as mom picked up the little bird.

She put the wee one on a small dish and walked out on the deck.  The bird quickly flew away.  Mom breathed a deep sigh of relief.                                                                        This bird is an Immature Ground Finch and looks just like the bird Shoko had but it wasn’t as fat as this bird.  Now, Shoko doesn’t jump for a bird so this bird must have been running around on the ground.  This is also Shoko’s first bird….it took her 7 years to find one on the ground, I guess.

Now for my secret about Shoko.  Shoko is afraid of the Cat’s Meow.  You know, that fun toy.                                                                              Mom brought it out of the cupboard where it was out of Shoko’s view.  I was excited…..this is me being excited!  MOL

Mom put the Cat’s meow in the living room for a week without turning it on.  Shoko was sniffing it and sitting beside it.  It was time to turn it on.                                                                        Where’s Shoko?  She’s behind the chesterfield poking her head out to watch it. MOL  This is the big fierce hunter we’re talking about here!

Now, on to our Sunday Selfie.  The Cat on My Head has a blog hop for all us anipals.  Just hit the blog name and you’ll find yourself viewing other  selfies.                                                                          I love my box and nobody tries to take it away from me.
