Kali’s Vet Visit

Mom was rather nonchalant this morning, which means she’s up to something.  I was keeping an eye open for any quick activity on her part….just in case she decided it was time I got meds cause my life was too happy.  Then it happened…Kali was picked up and thrown in her carrier.  Alright. alright, gently put into the carrier.  They all jumped in the Toyota, except for Kali who was singin’ the blues.  Take it away Kali.                                                              smsm KaliWe arrived at the vet’s stinky house and were taken into the office immediately.  My leg seemed to feel better almost instantly and I wanted off the cold steel table.  I hid and tried to pretend I was home.  Oh dear, home doesn’t ever stink like this place.                                                                       ackalivetDoes this pose look like you’ve seen it before?  This is my standard pose at the vets so nothing varies much.

Dr. V sauntered into the office and stated I was beautiful….maybe she’s not so bad after all.  She stroked me and then felt all up my front legs.  She was getting a little rude.  We just met!  She then put me on the floor and yelled asked me to walk.  I hobbled like at home.  She was quite concerned as was mom.  They decided to torture me for hours.  That’s what it felt like but really Dr. V did an x-ray of each leg.  Both legs showed a fair bit of arthritis in the shoulders and paws.  The worst arthritis was in my elbows which were inflamed and quite swollen.   I was at a loss for mew’s.  Horrified even!  Does this mean I’ll no longer pad about like a model?  I started to feel glum.  This is when Dr. V said I should be on liquid morphine for three days to control the inflammation and bring the swelling down.  They might just as well have been barking…I understood nothing.  Then Dr. V told mom and dad they had to treat me like a princess on a velvet pillow for the next few days.  I understood that.  What a marvelous vet….I like her.  No other vet has ever said that before.

When we got home I told Shoko what the vet said and she didn’t believe me.  You’ll see Shoko.                                                                            aakaliupcloseI had some yucky liquid in my mouth after supper and I am very sleepy, but my elbow is ok….not great but ok.  Really, I don’t care if I have an elbow about now.  I’m going to dream about the new tiara mom got for me.                                                               aaakalitiara

Have a great weekend my fwiends….think the morphine is starting to woke.

SHOKO…..BLACK

The med is putrid…oh my! The vet told mom to try and get it under my tongue but do these two try….no…they’re just happy to get it into my mouth. I am being treated very well…I like it and don’t see why I can’t be treated like this all the time.

Oh sweet Kali, we’s so sorry to hear you’re havin’ arfur-itis troubles. This is what mommy gave sis Lexi da Barley Cat fur. But since you won’t take it, we do hope what da VET gave you works. Hopefully you can find somethin’ more natural to take on a regular basis. And we’ll send lots of hugs and purrayers.

    Luv ya’

Thank you my southern friends. Mom says this will only last for 3 days and then it will get me over the hump and hopefully life will settle down for me. We still have the Barley Cat and mom says she will try that again after this stuff is finished.

      Luvs to wonderful ladies,

Oh Kali, we so hope you will eat da Barley Cat. It helped sis Lexi sooooo much. We know she hurt extra there towards da end cuz she couldn’t take it anymore cuz she wan’t eatin’ enuff and mommy was already shovin’ so much medicine down her she refused to do more than needed. Fankfully at da last she had pain meds and like you right now didn’t know she hurt. Sendin’ purrayers and hugs.

        Luv ya’

You might want to consider trying Hyaluronic Acid, It is a compound present in every tissue of the body, with the highest concentrations occuring in connective tissues such as skin and cartilage. Hyaluronic Acid is an important constituent of joint fluid, where it serves as a lubricant and plays a role in resisting compressive forces…. It relieves my lower back and knee pain (arthritis)…. I’ve heard that they also give it to horses, so assume a cat-size dose is possible.

A friend of mine also suffers from arthritis and has artificial knees. She uses that + 1 T collagen powder (that needs to be dissolved in a warm liquid) each day & told me. I’ve been trying these for a few months and my joints feel better. These are over the counter and relatively inexpensive, but I have no idea what a cat-size dose would be.

Research it & if you think it looks viable, as I did, test it on yourself… if you like the results, you can talk to your veterinarian and figure out a cat-size dose…. I, for on, prefer this homeopathic approach to narcotics. I know morphine works on the pain & I hope it works for Kali, but I don’t consider that to be a long-term solution.

Thank you my friend. I am a bit of a space cadet today but I got out to the catnip this morning, I haven’t been there in a couple of months. So it doesn’t hurt as much to walk today. We don’t get npr radio but I love your idea. Mom made an album for me…Kali’s Mellow Moments, I’ll get her to play it for me.

I always think if I can’t see them, they can’t see me. They always find me though. I’m headed out to the deck for a bit of sun. I very seldom wander out there but feel good enough today. Mom is not coughing as hard today so that’s a more positive sign.

Poor Kali! I think that your meds will help – at least I hope so. You are slim and trim so it wouldn’t help YOU with your arthritis, but when I lost four pounds it sure as heck stopped me from hobbling around – I haven’t hobbled in ages. Let’s hope after the inflammation is down your vet or your Mom can find a little something for you to take to keep things under control!!! Meanwhile, REST little Princess!

Mom phoned the vet cause I quit eating and if I don’t start eating the vet says to stop the med. Mom is giving me deli chicky slices with cheese tucked inside…Mmmmm…these are tasty little morsels. I will not eat anymore though. I do not weigh a lot but am a big boned kitty like Sammy.

Now Kali, you need to eat dear girl…..I don’t eat much these days but Mom finds that if she adds water so it’s more like soup, I will eat/lick/drink it. I’m eating MORE of my food if it’s like that for some reason. I do hope that you will find something that you like to eat…..we get a bit more picky as we age!

Kali is sound asleep so she’s not up walking around on her bad leg. We sure hope this morphine for 3 days helps sis as she is not her usual self. Mom will see if some other food is more tempting to Lady Kali.

OUCHIE. We hope you feel better soon. Maybe they can cut back a bit on the morphine so you can start to eat again. Mom says those supplements sound interesting and she’s going to research them too.

Wow, Kali. We didn’t know that vets prescribed morphine for kitties. We sure hope it is helping you. Tell your mom to take a nice blanket or towel with her when you got to the vet so you don’t have to sit on that cold metal table. Our vet is certified Cat Friendly, so we get to sit on a nice fleecy blanket atop a think foam cushion. Very nice, but we still usually hide our head just as you are doing. get better soon. This idea is first class! I don’t want to sit on the blanket in the carrier…it stinks of my dew from perspiring on the way to the vets, even though mom washes it out each time. A kitty cozy blanket from the bedroom would be nice. We can’t be too picky around here. There are three vets in town. We are on the second vet and the third vet is more of a horse doctor but will do pets too. We’ll stay where we are.

    Hi there,
The morphine was not right for me. I had too many problems. We are going to try hyaluronic acid….something more natural and see if I can get some relief. It is not available in Canada or at least not on amazon.ca but it is on amazon.com and they will ship here. I do feel better now that I’m off the morphine.

My visit to the vet was better this time. Although I drooled all over mom’s coat but she didn’t care. She said it needed washing anyway.

Dr. V is a lovely lady. She understands how I should be treated and treats me like a little lady. I just adore her! I have several problems but I am eating very good now. I was so full when we went to the vets, Dr. V couldn’t feel around my tummy….too big. MOL
