Planes, Trains and Automobiles Pt. 3

So mom and dad had a most enjoyable sleep at the Hilton in Huntsville.  Unfortunately it was a case of up and out and on the road at 8am.  No more visiting with June and Jim….mom thought of phoning around 6:30am and thought better of it.  Dad adjusted the GPS on their little car and off they went back to Memphis.  Mom says the car ride was uneventful.

Mom and dad went cruising through Memphis and were crossing a bridge when mom hollered, “We’re in Arkansas! Let’s stop and get a souvenir of Arkansas.” Dad looked at her like she was acting weird again but stopped at a gas station. Mom jumped out….or should I say crawled out…she’d been sitting for over 4 hours. Inside the gas station she didn’t see anything like a souvenir so asked the man behind the counter. He looked just like a serial killer off of Criminal Minds as he said NO..we don’t have that kind of stuff, lady!

Look at that face…he would have scared me.

Mom went back to the car and told dad that Arkansas peeps didn’t seem that friendly so let’s get back to Memphis. Dad set up the GPS. They were back in Memphis very quickly and went to Sun Studios. This is where Elvis recorded his first songs. This place was just a “hole-in-the- wall” type of place.

The singers in the picture had their start at Sun Studio.

Mom was anxious to go and meet my friend, Pete Saunders mom for lunch. Pete is the co-leader of the ThunderCats Patrol in Cat Scouts. Off they scurried and had a terrific chat and lunch with Teresa.

Mom and dad piled into the car again and headed to the Civil Rights Museum. The museum is situated right beside  from the Lorraine Motel…where Martin Luther King was shot.

A charismatic and power leader....what a waste?

A charismatic and powerful leader….what a waste?

One cannot help but get choked up at the plight of the coloured man/woman. It’s hard to believe that this is the United States and not some fascist country! Can you imagine being in chains and forced to work without enough water or food. Your family taken away from you and sold to plantations far away. Never, ever knowing where your child ended up…is he alive or dead? In western Canada we heard some news about the struggles of Negroes and saw some riots on TV but we were not in the climate of anxiety like the southern states were. To do this museum justice, you must spend at least 4 hours combing through the exhibits and write ups. Fascinating!!

The pawents headed back to the hotel. Mom says she can’t remember if she ate out….although she must have. They were very tired because they did all of these activities in one day. So it was time for a little shut eye.

Feb 23rd. Monday morn at 4am they were up to catch the. “City of New Orleans,” to Nawlins’. Mom says the strange thing about Memphis was there were hardly any cars on the road. It was quieter than Prince George. She figures it was because of the freezing rain.

Look at the ice on this truck!

Look at the ice on this truck!

Mom and dad went slippin’ and slidin’ onto the train. Hey, this looks familiar, those steep stairs again. The bathroom is downstairs and coach isn’t. Hmmmm.
.

Agh….comfy. Mom brought some sandwiches for lunch and accidently sat on them. Whoops, she tried plumping them up a bit. A little fluffing here and there….good as new…well almost. The train started up and that was it for mom….

The busy schedule caught up with mom

There were many sights one doesn’t see here in western Canada. The Spanish Moss hanging from the trees was beautiful. Mom wondered if the moss actually killed the tree or was it just the time of year they saw them.

Spanish moss on this tree...awesome!

Lunch time. Dad declined the squished sandwiches saying he wasn’t hungry….. ENOUGH. Mom dug into an Italian sandwich…pepperoni, hugarian salami and cervelat salami…Mmmm. Ohh that’s another thing mom noticed…everywhere there was Coke no Pepsi. The little cafeteria on the train had Coke so a diet Coke it was.

They arrived in New Orleans around 3:30pm and headed straight for the condo. They walked into the building just off of Bourbon St. The facility was under construction…men were scuffling back and forth.  Mom were wondering if they got a “pig in a poke.” Finally they found their floor after going through several doors….which cut the noise down. Mom and dad then walked and walked and walked some more. There wasn’t a peep out of any construction folk by the time they made it to the condo. They were delighted when they opened the door.

Whoohoo, the same bed for more than one night. They deposited all their luggage and headed out for a bite of dinner.

At the corner of Bienville (their street) and Bourbon was a band in the middle of the street. Bourbon St, was blocked off to vehicles. Imagine….Monday night!

After watching the band for awhile the pawents ate and went back to the condo for the night. Their colds were full blown by now and they slept like babes.

The final part will cover their stay in New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana.

The adventure continues!! Nice that your Mom and Dad got to meet Pete’s Mom…..it’s fun to meet other blog buddies. I think with winter having haunted us all along the Eastern Seaboard this year, a lot of the normal “hubbub” – even in some of the “tourist trap” spots, has been cut down a whole lot. Less people, less traffic, less everything……so as long as the weather doesn’t bother anyone (other than getting a cold of course!) it’s probably a good time to travel. It’s very tiring though – just not having your own bed/food/routine so no doubt as good a time as they had, they are HAPPY TO BE HOME WITH YOU AND KALI!!!!!!

    Woo Hoo,

It’s great to travel through the U.S. with you, we always remember the bad things too, that’s important. If we ignore the past we can’t make it better in the future. It’s like a miracle that you saw places were Elvis was once in pawson…Glad the “stairway to heaven” is still the same, so all passengers feel like “home” in all trains :o) Sorry for the pancake-sandwiches, on the other hand they can’t fall apart when they are a little pressed :o)
bw: to meet a scary celebrity at the gas station ist not bad at all, even this evil guy played just a role… at least … I hope so :o)

That’s true Easy! Mom did walk where Elvis and Martin Luther King walked. Mom and dad were given a look into King’s bedroom too. The sandwiches did stay together…and mom ate both. Can you imagine the expression on mom’s face when she looked into the attendant at the gas stations eyes….probably similar to the response to dad’s advice about train travel! hehe

They really aren’t the relaxing type Dezi. I was scared of the gas station attendant…this is Criminal Minds idea of a serial killer…I guess mom’s too! If, you thought he was handsome….you too could be a future victim. They sure did see some strange things but these only made there visit more interesting…hehe

Myself, I thought mom was jumping to conclusions about all of the Arkansas peeps and that’s not like her but hey, what scares one doesn’t necessarily scare another. Serial killers are scary enough for me….course mountain folk playing the banjo would have freaked mom out. hehe

The only movie mom ever watched that scared the stuffing out of her was called, “Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte.” About the inhabitants of a southern plantation. She never got over it. She put towels down at her closet and door for many a year. When she is unwell now….she looks for Charlotte’s ghost before she goes to bed. Yes, mom has a problem! You never know who is a serial killer…that’s the scary part. One could be a neighbour….your kin even.
        Ahhh…I’m getting scared.

Mom and dad said they were saddened to see ya’ll leave Sunday morning. They understood you had to get back but next time, you need to come to Atlanta where they will show you ALL of the sights and have the bestest of all times. Mom says there is lots to see here. 🙂
I couldn’t imagine walking into the gas station and seeing Mr. Creepy at the counter. He just looks like trouble in the making! Get in the car, lock the doors and RUN – snorts.
You two got to see so many wonderful places here in the south – some places that my mom/dad still haven’t seen yet. What a wonderful trip you had!! Pictures and memories for a life time. Mom/dad said they were so glad to be part of it our sweet friends. And hey, you were just making Panini’s out of those sammies – snorts. XOXO – Bacon

Mom and dad said they wanted to stay and have fun with you two some more. They said they have learned from this trip, actually it was dad again, and they have to spend longer in every place….they were just too rushed. Isn’t that the way though…when you live close to this special places….we don’t visit. Mom and dad were born in Vancouver and dad spend his childhood there. They didn’t go to Whistler or any of the ski places….cause they don’t ski or up Grouse Mountain. They went to Whistler when they visited Vancouver one summer. We would love to go to Atlanta. Mom and dad’s memories are indeed sweet. You two certainly perked them up and made the drive to Huntsville worthwhile. That’s right…mom served Panini’s….hehehe

    Lots of love,

What a great trip! Dad used to take a lot of trips around the USA on his motorcycle and was in Arkansas during the summer. The bugs were so thick that he left his helmet on walking in to pay for gas and all the outside lights had a deep layer of bug inside. Amazing but yucky so you went through at the best time is sounds. Dad used to get fridge magnets. Easy, most times anyhow, to find at any gas stop on a highway.
Nawleens is wonderful! Glad you had such fun. Even with the sandwich debacle MOL
