Hush…Hush Sweet Charlotte

This is October and rightly a scary month. The trees and green growth are dying back for Lady Winter’s arrival and Jack Frost’s cold breath. Halloween is at the end of the month with all the strange costumes coming at us. These elements all combine for a tempting scare!

Mom is not scared of these things but one thing that terrifies her to this day is the movie, “Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte”. This movie accomplished what it was suppose to with mom and more. Mom said she saw the movie when she was 16 years old, with her first boyfriend. She wanted to break up with him but she was a little apprehensive as to how to accomplish this goal. This boyfriend had a bad temper and was 4 years older than her. So with this not so charming chap mom went to the movie.

After viewing the movie mom was looking for Charlotte in the closet every night and putting towels under the cracks on the closet and bedroom doors….just to make sure the essence of Charlotte’s father,Charlotte and her lover, John, couldn’t get in. Mom was still doing the looking behaviour when she got married, 5 years later. Needless to say the movie scared the cwap out of her and left a lasting impression.. I’m sure dad must have thought she was a little different, to put it nicely. Imagine the reaction he got the first time he wanted to open a window in the bedroom at night? haha

We have seen, “Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte” in colour and black and white. The black and white version is scariest of the two. Kali and I have watched “Charlotte” several times and it’s just as terrifying each time.

Why do some movies terrify us and others are so so?

After telling you how scary “Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte was and still is…..just listen to the music from this thriller.

What happened to mom’s boyfriend? Well, she finally broke up with him and got another boyfriend. The first boyfriend had a car and tried to run the second boyfriend off the road and the last she heard, the RCMP were dealing with him.

How freaky is that…that was my mom’s first horror movie too that she saw when she was a bit younger than yours!! Still to this day she’s wary of leaving her arms stretched out for fear of them getting chopped off…lol. Her worst one tho strangely enough was Space Odyssey 2001…after seeing that she thought the monkeys lived in her basement and for a few years was too scared to go down there by herself.

It does make ya wonder. She says she is fascinated by the show and wonders why it is so scary to her….I mean this woman is terrified. Does she relate to Charlotte? Was she afraid her dad would do that to a boyfriend? Was she afraid someone was trying to drive her crazy? She keeps trying to understand and then she gets scared and can’t reason anymore. She is a peep and why she doesn’t just chalk it up to, “hey this scares the cwap out of me”. I have no idea….but I must admit….it scares Kali and I too.

My Mom says she VIVIDLY remembers “Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte”…… incredibly good acting and it was totally spooky. It is funny though how what movies she USED to think were scary but now thinks are hilarious – for instance “Night Of The Living Dead” – that movie terrified her “way back when” and now she laughs more than freaks out when she watches it. Mom and Dad watch that movie and “The Blob” every Halloween – oldies – just like they are (hahahahaha).

Hahaha…sorry, but I can just picture your mom as a young girl tripping over this wino! Now, if this happened to me….I’d be terrified too. However, it sounds so funny, Easy. Mom says she barely remembers The Fog….they made a new one too but I don’t think you mean that one. Adrienne Barbeau was in the old Fog, I believe. She was off of Maude. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again.

Good for your pawrents watching spooky movies on Halloween. After seeing “Charlotte”, nothing else really scared mom. She thinks, “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?” came pretty close but she says the rat scene grossed her out more than anything. Of course, this was before she had cats that would bring her mice and birds…haha

This first boyfriend was really a scary guy, I hope he is far away and he never comes back. My mom made the same experience with “The Fog”, she watched it at her friends house sho lived in sight distance. As she went home, the friend and her dad waited in their door till my mom entered her driveway and there it happened: she stumbled over a drunken guy who slept it off in the driveway of her house. I’m sure the scream of my mom alarmed the whole town. 87 neighbors came for help and they laughed their butts off as they saw that it was just a boozer and not someone with a bushwhacker :o)

Mom says she went and saw The Exorcist with a girlfriend and though it didn’t upset mom, her girlfriend was scared out of her tree. Mom had probably seen Charlotte by this time and couldn’t afford to be looking out for too many folk hiding in her room. She’d be busy all night…hahaha Sorry mom, she didn’t think my light heartedness was funny. Many a hoomin thought this movie was the scariest.
